This native tree is commonly known as scaly tree fern.
Sphaeropteris cooperi is described as a "fern" in the Cyatheaceae family.
In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Least Concern. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.
Distribution north, south and west of Fraser Coast region. Within the region only recorded on K'gari (Fraser Island). Previously known as Cyathea cooperi (Queensland Flora Census 2020). Stipe and rachis brown to straw coloured, warty or rough but not prickly (Ferns of Queensland a handbook to the ferns and fern allies S.B.Andrews).
It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census but is not listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in the Atlas of Living Australia.
