Species information

Hibiscus sabdariffa     L.

This introduced shrub is commonly known as rosella.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is described as a "dicot" in the Malvaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Proposed name Sabdariffa gossypiifolia (Barrett RL et al. (2025) Reinstatement of Sabdariffa and new combinations to support a monophyletic concept of Hibiscus (Malvaceae: Hibisceae). Australian Systematic Botany 38, SB24013. doi:10.1071/SB24013 ).  

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census but is not listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in the Atlas of Living Australia.

Reported at 1 Fraser Coast locality: Craignish.
