Species information

Orthoceras strictum     R.Br.

This native groundcover is commonly known as horned orchid.

Orthoceras strictum is described as a "monocot" in the Orchidaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Least Concern. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

A tall slender plant with a tuft of linear, grass-like leaves absent or withered at flowering time. Flowering stem 25-40cm high with 3-10 3cm high dark greenish brown flowers. Flowering period September-October. Rare in area. Poona N/P (Boonooroo); Tandora (Alan Logan). Distribution is from Fraser Coast region southward apart from an outlier to the north at Hughenden. Listed as a special least concern species in Queensland (https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/plants-animals/plants/protected-plants/harvesting). 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in the Atlas of Living Australia.
